​Ordering Recommendation

  • ​ ​Performed on suspected Acute Leukemia, lymphocytosis or when abnormal lymphoid cells present

Specimen Requirements​ ​

  • 4 unstained smears on specimens collected outside Saskatoon

​Collection Procedure
  • Specimens may be collected Sunday to Thursday, must be less than 24 hours old when received in the Flow Cytometry Lab
  • Specimens must arrive before noon on Friday (or day before Stat holiday)
  • Referred-in specimens (specimens not collected with-in Saskatoon) phone 655-2220 to notify lab prior to collection
  • If you require a Flow Cytometry Requisition we will fax or e-mail one to you. Complete requisition with patient’s name, sex, HSN, Doctor, diagnosis and relevant clinical information.
  • Include recent CBC and differential result
  • Package requisition, CBC and differential results, and smears with sample(s) in an insulated container with ice pack. Insulate specimen from ice pack to protect from freezing. Put address labels on two sides of the package or box

  • ​Optimal Volume:
    • Blood- 2 – 4mL

    • Bone Marrow Aspirate – 1- 4 mL
      (Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)

​Additional Comments
  • ​If Bone Marrow aspirate is not possible, Flow Cytometry can be performed on Blood provided greater than 10% blasts are present
  • Flow Cytometry is not performed for neutrophilia in blood
