  • ​This test is only for patient’s undergoing cardiovascular surgery using bypass equipment
  • Not indicated as a screening test for cold agglutinin disease

  • Minimum Volume: 1 mL
    (Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)

Availability​

​Saskatoon:

  • RUH on site testing available 24 hours/7 days per week
  • SCH on site testing available 0730-1530 Monday through Friday, excluding statutory holidays and bank days. After hours (1531 through 0729 hours) testing referred to RUH.
  • SPH on site testing available 0700-1730 Monday through Friday, excluding statutory holidays. After hours (1731through 00659 hours) testing referred to RUH.

Rural:

  • Not available
Results Reporting​

Routine:

  • Within 24 hours of receipt in Transfusion Medicine

STAT:

  • Within one hour of receipt in Transfusion Medicine
​Clinical Interpretation
  • ​Detects cold agglutinins present in the patient which may cause complications during cardiovascular surgery due to the lowered body temperature
​Specimen Retention
  • 5 weeks, however testing must be performed prior to storage at <20°C

​Additional Comments

​When indicated, cold antibody screen investigation for select patients scheduled to undergo cardiovascular surgery shall be performed no more than twenty eight days prior to surgical date.
