Hematology - Special Coagulation

​Ordering Recommendation

  • ​​Patient should not be on any anticoagulant
  • If unable to discontinue anticoagulant therapy, suggest consultation with hematopathologist prior to ordering

Specimen Requirements​ ​

  • ​Whole blood
​Collection Procedure
​Required Volume
  • ​Please see Von Willebrand Factor Panel when ordering in conjunction with other Von Willebrand Factor testing
  • When testing multiple factors please phone Special Coagulation
    (306-655-2178) for optimum volumes
  • Optimal Volume for single test: Two 2.7ml 3.2% Buffered Na Citrate or three 1.8 ml 3.2% Buffered Na Citrate
    (Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
  • ​Whole blood specimen shall be received at RUH Coagulation Laboratory within 2 hours of collection
  • Specimen is discarded after reporting
  • If an extra specimen is collected it is retained for 3 months.
Grounds for Rejection​
  • ​Line draws
  • Hemolyzed
  • Clotted
  • Inappropriately filled tubes
  • Patient on anticoagulant therapy testing must be approved by the Hematopathologist on service
  • Frozen aliquot specimen shipped without dry ice
  • Plasma specimen that has thawed and been refrozen
  • Plasma specimen that has thawed for more than 2 hours

Testing Information​ ​

  • ​Monday to Friday 07:30 – 16:00 excluding statutory holidays unless approved by the hematopathologist on call

  • ​Specimens are batched and performed once per week
