  • ​​Fasting overnight (12-14 hours)
  • Patient must not consume any alcohol for 24 hours before the specimen is collected
  • Fasting Acid Profiles ordered via the SCM ordering system (RUH) require the Acute Care Phlebotomy Requisition Form #101062

  • Must be frozen within 24 hours of collection

  • ​Optimal Volume: 4.5 mL Full collection tube
  • Minimum Volume: 0.15 mL
    (Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)

  • Evaluating the nutritional intake and intestinal absorption of essential fatty acids
  • Identifying deficiency of essential and other nutritionally beneficial fatty acids
  • Monitoring treatment of patients with essential fatty acid deficiencies who are receiving linoleic acid (C18:2w6) and alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3w3)
