Specimen Requirements
Type	Lumbar puncture Shunt
Container	Preferred Collection Container: CSF Collection Kit Alternate Collection Container: Sterile, black screw-cap, round bottom tube
Collection Procedure	Refer to CSF Collection Guidelines for order of draw instructions Tubes provided in the CSF Collection Kit are pre-numbered (1 to 4) indicating the order sample tubes are drawn during collection. IF alternate collection container is used, tubes MUST be numbered with the order sample tubes are drawn.
Required Volume	Optimal Volume: 3 mL Minimum Volume: 1 mL (Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection. If less than the minimum volume is submitted, TB/AFB culture may be prioritized in consultation with the Microbiologist-on-call at 306-655-1000.)
Stability/Storage	Hand deliver to laboratory promptly Stable at room temperature if sample cannot be immediately transported

Availability	Division of Clinical Microbiology Laboratory Hours of Operation STAT requests outside of these hours must be approved by the Microbiologist-on-call at 306-655-1000

Results Reporting	Critical and Semi-Urgent Values Notifications Chart for Clinical Microbiology Anticipated Reporting Times for Clinical Microbiology Results
Reflex Testing	TB/AFB (Mycobacterium) culture will be added to TB PCR request
Clinical Interpretation	Methodology and Clinical Interpretation for Microbiology Testing
