​ ​Specimen Requirements

​Container
  • Microscopic slide with frosted end, plastic slide mailer
​Collection Procedure
  • ​Using a lead pencil, label frosted end of microscope slide with patient’s last name, first name and personal health number (PHN)
  • Smear specimen directly onto labelled slide with frosted side up
  • Fix immediately with spray fixative
  • Place slide in plastic mailer, leaving mailer open until slide is completely dry. Close mailer and place in biohazard bag. Place completed requisition, with label facing out, in outside pouch.
  • Deliver to Cytology laboratory
​Stability/Storage
  • ​Slide must be fixed immediately with spray fixative to avoid air drying of cells

  • Slides are retained for 20 years
