​Collection Procedure
  • Collect blood within 10 days of onset of symptoms
​Required Volume
  • Optimal Volume: 8.5 mL
  • Minimum Volume: 2 mL
    (Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection)
​Stability/Storage
  • ​Transport to laboratory immediately
  • If transportation is delayed, spin (gel) or remove serum from cells (red) within six (6) hours of collection
  • Refrigerate serum and ship on cold pack within 24 hours of collection
  • After 24 hours, freeze serum at -20°C and ship frozen on dry ice

Grounds for Rejection​
  • ​Specimens may be subject to rejection by testing site if they are not the appropriate sample type, have insufficient volume or are not accompanied by relevant patient information detailed on “Requisition for Viral Zoonoses - National Microbiology Laboratory”
