​Specimen Requirements​

  • ​Whole blood
  • ​Preferred Collection Container: Lavender (EDTA)
    • Microvette EDTA is not acceptable
​Required Volume


  • ​Store at 2 - 8º C
  • Must be tested within 96 hours of collection 
Grounds for Rejection​

Testing Information​ ​

  • ​Saskatoon:
    • RUH on site testing available 24 hours/7 days
    • SPH on site testing available 0730-1730 Monday through Friday, excluding statutory holidays. After hours (1731 through 0729 hours) testing referred to RUH.
  • Routine samples processed 0700-1630 Monday through Friday, excluding statutory holidays and bank days
  • Requests for urgent or after-hours sample processing must be discussed and approved by the Transfusion Medicine Physician on-call
Results Reporting​
  • Within 48 hours of receipt depending on complexity of testing required
​Reflex Testing
  • ​Reflex testing determined by type of reaction and results of initial testing

​Additional Comments
  • ​Antibody investigation referral service is available for northern Saskatchewan laboratories who are not able to perform simple antibody identification on site, or who require complex antibody investigation
  • Crossmatch Sample Collection and Testing Algorithm
  • Include the following:
    • A copy of the collection requisition (if using a facility/region-specific form)
    • Copies of all testing results including blood group, antibody worksheets, phenotype results and history (if available)
    • Medication list (if available)

​Relevant Clinical History
  • Recent transfusion history (within the last 3 months)
  • Recent pregnancy (within the last 3 months)
  • Prior hematopoietic progenitor stem cell transplant
  • Previously identified antibodies (If patient presents with an Antibody Card, photocopy card and forward it along with the test request form)
