Blood Gases, Venous Temperature Corrected - Syringe


​​Specimen Requirements​

  • ​Whole blood
  • ​Preferred Collection Container: Syringe (calcium and electrolyte balanced)
​Collection Procedure
  • Blood must be collected from a vein
  • Air bubbles must be avoided or removed from the syringe sample
  • To avoid clotting sample, contents in the syringe must be mixed
  • Transport sample on ice to the laboratory immediately
  • Patient temperature in Celsius must be provided to laboratory with the specimen
​Required Volume
  • ​Optimal Volume: 1 ml
  • Pediatric Volume: 0.5 mL
    (Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection.)
​Stability/ Storage
  • ​1 hour post collection - Delayed analysis increases the risk that test results no longer represent patient status
​Grounds for Rejection

Testing Information​ ​

  • ​24 hours a day
Testing Site​
  • RUH
Results Reporting​
  • ​Within 15 minutes of receipt in laboratory
  • pH, pO2 and pCO2 will be reported with both uncorrected and temperature corrected results
  • ​Amperometric and potentiometric assays
​Specimen Retention
  • Specimens are discarded immediately after testing
​Additional Information
  • ​Venous samples collected in a syringe(calcium and electrolyte balanced) will have whole blood ionized calcium reported as well
