  • ​To aid in determination of immune status to Rubella virus
  • List relevant clinical symptoms and/or immunizations

  • ​Serum
  • ​Preferred Collection Container: Tiger (gel)
  • Alternative Collection Container: Red
​Required Volume

​Whole Blood

  • Optimal Volume: 8.0 mL
  • Minimum Volume: 3.0 mL
    (Submitting the minimum volume makes it impossible to repeat the test or perform confirmatory/reflex testing. In some situations, a minimum volume may require a second collection)

Serum (For Laboratory Use Only)

  • Minimum Volume: 1.0 mL

  • ​Stable at room temperature for 24 hours
  • Greater than 24 hours, refrigerate at 2 to 8°C
  • Greater than 72 hours, spin, remove serum and freeze (-10°C or colder)

  • ​Indirect Chemiluminescence Immunoassay (CLIA)
​Clinical Interpretation
  • ​Positive result indicates immunization or past exposure to Rubella virus
  • Antibody levels in the equivocal range may be insufficient to protect against illness
  • Equivocal results – a new sample should be submitted
  • Negative results do not preclude recent primary rubella infection
    Rubella IgM testing should be done to diagnose recent primary infection
