​Tissue and Bone Bank

Information​Transfusion Medicine and the Saskatchewan transplant Program provide and maintain a tissue bank service which may include tissue from living and deceased donors. Regulations outlined by Health Canada (HC) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) are followed to provide safe product for replacement or repair of injuries/conditions in recipients during surgical techniques.

Note: Also refer to Operating Room Policy and Procedure Manual for Procurement and Use of Surgical Bone and Tissue

  1. Identify, retrieve and label specimens as indicated in department procedures.
  2. Place tissue for culture (c/s) into sterile container (eg. pink Sterile Starplex® container). Label the tissue specimen container with the patient’s first and last name, and health services number.
  3. Obtain the packaged tissue from the scrub nurse and place a label with the patient’s first and last name and health services number.
    • Femoral head jars – place the patient identification label on the lid
    • Tissue in sterile wrap – place the patient identification label onto the sterile wrapping
    • Small sterile storage container – place patient identification label over top of the container’s blank label

      Note: If there are multiple tissues collected from one donor, labelling on the tissue container and requisitions must clearly indicate what type of tissue is contained within the container/wrapping.

  4. Complete Section A of a Tissue Bank Donor Form (FORM-244) and the green Cellular Therapy Product/Tissue Bank C&S Form (FORM-272).
