A challenge to dig deeper
In fall 2011, Saskatoon Health Region was challenged to dig deeper into design to reconcile available funding with the building's latest cost estimate and early (schematic) design. The Health Region decided to focus even more on incorporating lean methodology using 3P (production preparation process).
The result was teams of patients and families, staff and physicians collecting detailed data on the patient experience today, determining even more ways to improve processes including "just-in-time" supply delivery, and most importantly, reduce the waits patients have and stops patients make. This work resulted in the teams creating two dimensional floor plans for each area, three dimensional table top models and life size mock-ups of certain rooms to test concepts. (December 2011 and March 2012 videos).

Saskatoon Health Region's Lean Journey
Today, the work started during these 3P events has started transformational change across Saskatoon Health Region. The improvement ideas identified by the CHS 3P teams have already moved forward and some have been implemented using Rapid Process Improvement Workshops (RPIW).
