Palliative Care

Palliative care is a service of active compassionate care which centres on achieving the best possible quality-of-life for a person at the end of life’s journey. Palliative care focuses on providing for the needs of people living with a life-ending illness.

The physical, psychological and spiritual needs of both the patient and the family are a significant part of palliative care. People who choose palliative care have come to a decision – along with their family and their doctor – to move away from curative goals to palliative, or comfort care. Medical involvement is focused on symptom management and pain control.

Palliative Care Services in Saskatoon Health Region include:

  • a 12 bed Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul's Hospital
  • consultation teams at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon City Hospital and St. Paul's Hospital
  • palliative consultation for long term care facilities in the Region
  • palliative care beds in Humboldt, Lanigan, Nokomis, Rosthern, Wadena, Wakaw, Watrous, and Wynyard
  • a palliative care volunteer program and bereavement support services
