(Saskatoon) - Saskatoon Health Region's Population and Public and Saskatoon Breastfeeding Matters have developed a new Breastfeeding Protection Pledge with an accompanying Passport to Breastfeeding program to build the confidence of new mothers who are choosing to breastfeed.

"Sometimes new moms can feel a little nervous or apprehensive when it comes to breastfeeding in public places," explains Dr. Johnmark Opondo, Deputy Medical Health Officer.  "What this passport provides is a list of safe, comfortable environments where mothers know they can breastfeed without fear of disturbance or confrontation."

Many champion businesses and organizations have gotten on board with the program including ten restaurants, leisure centres, libraries, Station 20 West, Saskatoon Mothers' Centre and the Saskatoon Friendship Inn. The "passports" will be distributed by Public Health Nurses to moms at two and four month baby check-ups.  

The champion businesses featured in the Passport to Breastfeeding have signed a pledge guaranteeing that staff have been trained in the event of public complaints. Each participating he business acknowledges the importance of a welcoming environment for breastfeeding families. 

Women will be able to identify these businesses in three different ways: (1) in the passport itself; (2) by an identifying sticker on the window of the business or organization; (3) on the Saskatoon Breastfeeding Matters website at http://www.saskatoonbreastfeedingmatters.ca

"This program is new, revolutionary, and completely unique to Saskatoon," says Dr. Opondo. "We believe this program is an excellent opportunity for leaders in the business community to show their support for new families."
