Staff from the Irene and Leslie Dubé Centre for Mental Health have banded together to donate a mountain of underwear and socks to the Lighthouse in Saskatoon.

The donation of 1,628 items was dropped off at the Lighthouse by the team last week.

Colleen Cameron, clinical coordinator at the Dubé Centre, was the mastermind behind the donation.

Cameron, who is also a part-time mental health clinical instructor with the University of Saskatchewan College of Nursing, takes students to tour the Lighthouse as part of their training, as many clients use their resources. During the last tour, she asked what they need most, aside from money.

"Socks and underwear were at the top of the list," Cameron says, "so I decided to get a fun fundraiser going at work with our staff over the month of July."

Over the past many years, staff in Acute Care Mental Health Services has donated items for patients over Christmas. They make up Christmas bags to hand out to all the patients – adult, youth and child – on Christmas Day.

According to Cameron, "I thought, 'why don't we try to replicate this generosity and do it in July? And make it fun for the staff, as well as helping those in need at the Lighthouse?'"

Staff at Dubé Centre was divided into two teams, and from July 8 to August 6, they collected new socks, underwear and bras for the Lighthouse. The winning team was promised a free pizza lunch as a reward. But that didn't quite work out as planned.

"Because the winning team was so generous, the pizza lunch was provided to both teams, courtesy of our Staff Social committee," Cameron says.

The items were delivered to the Lighthouse on August 15.

"This really worked out well," Cameron says. "The staff had great fun, while at the same time donating very useful and much-needed items.  They are already talking about what our next challenge/fundraiser may be."
